On December 21 Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, visited Washington, DC on his first trip outside his homeland since it was invaded by Russia earlier this year. Zelensky, a former comedian and actor, was recently named the Time Magazine Man Of The Year due to the courage and leadership ability he has demonstrated in the face of an military attack from one of the strongest nations on our planet. We’ve all been amazed at how the Ukranians, under Zelesnsky’s courageous and skillful leadership, have stood up to the Russian military.
President Zelensky met with U.S. President Biden in the afternoon on December 21 and addressed a joint session of Congress later that night. He was here to update our nation’s leadership about what is going on in Ukraine, and to ask for more military and economic aid.
Regardless of how you might feel about our nation’s financial support of the Ukrainian people, I thought President Zelensky’s address to Congress was especially stirring. He spoke eloquently about the sacrifices his people are making. He said, “In two days we will celebrate Christmas. Maybe by candle light. Not because it’s more romantic, but because there will be no electricity.”
To those who question our nation’s financial support of Ukraine Zelensky said: “Your money is not charity. It’s an investment in the global security and democracy that we handle in the most responsible way.” He also declared, “The struggle will define in what world our children and grandchildren will live in.”
