Journey Through The Bible Hero

Ezekiel 44:1 – 45:12, 1 Peter 1:1-12, Psalm 119:17-32, Proverbs 28:8-10

“All honor to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, for it is by His boundless mercy that God has given us the privilege of being born again. Now we live with a wonderful expectation because Jesus Christ rose again from the dead. For God has reserved a priceless inheritance for His children. It is kept in heaven for you, pure and undefiled, beyond the reach of change and decay. And God, in His mighty power, will protect you until you receive this salvation, because you are trusting in Him.”(1 Peter 1:3-5 NLT)

Question – “What type of expectations do you have for your life – and why do you have those expectations?” While most people have big expectations for our lives, some people don’t expect big things in their lives and it may be because of the circumstances they have grown up in as a child or teen. Most of us have big expectations concerning the type of person we want to eventually marry, or concerning the type of career we want to be involved in. We have big expectations concerning the significance and success we will achieve in life, as well as the satisfaction we will experience in our lives.

Why do we have such expectations? Perhaps because of the ability and intellect the Lord has given to us, or because we were brought up in positive, affirming environments, where we were led to believe that we can and should have big expectations in our lives.

The Apostle Peter has a word for us concerning “big expectations.” He writes: “Now we live with a wonderful expectation because Jesus Christ rose again from the dead.” Peter is saying that we can have our greatest expectations because of the resurrection of Jesus from the grave.

Second Question – “How do we know that Jesus rose from the grave?” We know that Jesus rose from the grave because of the testimonies of the writers of the Bible who were inspired by the Holy Spirit, and because of the testimony of witnesses on that day. Over a period of 40 days following Jesus’ resurrection, individuals, couples, small groups and even 500 people at one time had meetings with the resurrected Lord. We can also believe that Jesus rose from the grave because of the transformation the resurrection brought to the early disciples. Following Jesus’ resurrection, they were transformed from defeated and cowardly men to delighted and courageous men. We can believe in the resurrection of Jesus from the grave because of the rapid expansion of Christianity in the first century. We can believe that Jesus rose from the grave because of the way He has impacted our lives and as well as billions of lives throughout history. The resurrection of Jesus is the best attested fact in all of history.

Third Question – “What kind of ‘wonderful expectations’ should the resurrection of Jesus bring to our lives?” As a result of the resurrection of Jesus from the grave, we can expect to receive forgiveness from the Lord and begin fellowshipping with the Lord when we experience His great salvation in our lives (Acts 3:19, John 15:15). Because Jesus is alive today, we can also expect to experience freedom from the hurts, habits and hang-ups of our lives, and great fulfillment and joy in our lives (John 8:32, 10:10, 15:11). Through Jesus, we can expect to experience the power, provision and protection of God in our lives (Philippians 4:13, 19; Romans 8:31). We can expect that He will always be with us, that He will never forsake us, and that He will always be working on our behalf to bring goodness and victory to our lives (Romans 8:28,31, 35-38). Finally, we can expect that when we leave this life, we will experience eternal life and great rewards in God’s wonderful place called Heaven (1 Peter 1:4-5). We can have these incredible and wonderful expectations because Jesus has risen from the grave and lives today to exercise His power on behalf of His followers.

As you pray today: 1) Praise the Lord for who He is – the victorious, risen and reigning King of kings and Lord of lords; 2) Thank the Lord for the wonderful expectations you have because He has risen from the grave; and 3) Pray for others you need to talk with who need to experience the presence and power of Jesus in their lives, so they can also have wonderful expectations in their lives.
